If you live or work in a building where you find stunned migrating birds, please contact us at info@birdmonitors.net.
Please turn out your office lights at night and encourage your colleagues to do the same. Turning out these lights during migration, or drawing the blinds at night greatly reduces the risk to migrating birds.
Move plants away from windows during migration or break up the clear view of greenery inside. Otherwise, migratory birds may try to land in your home or office! Draw blinds, use decals or otherwise alter this view of "habitat" so that birds will not be tempted to find shelter in your indoor plants. Birds do not see glass and more and more we are realizing that it is a potted plant that has drawn a bird to strike glass- particularly when lit at night and close to a window.
Move bird feeders within 3 feet of your windows. Many strikes occur as birds are leaving feeders -placement is critical! Dr. Klem, a leading authority on the issues believes that winter strikes kill more birds than collisions during migration- many of these winter strikes being traceable to bird feeder placement.
If you have windows that birds strike, use decals, films, streamers or other decorations to break up the dangerous reflections. There are solutions for every environment. FLAP has a very good resource page on this very issue along with their own attractive suction cup design. Cutouts that move in the wind are even more effective than decals. Just remember that whatever treatment you use, you will need to break up the reflection quite regularly to be effective, ideally every 2-4 inches.
Use Birdscreen or one way films on problem windows (you see out, but the window looks solid to birds). Just click here to access the FLAP site and their many resource links.
If you are a landscaper, please try to minimize dangerous reflections of trees and shrubs. If you do interior landscaping, please do not design with inside trees ot shrubs close to outside lobby or plate glass windows unless these windows are modified to break-up the clear and inviting bird habitat. Please contact us for further assistance.
If you are an architect, please consider using bird safe glass with patterns on the OUTSIDE of the glass. Internal fritting is not an effective solution. There are new products available with fritting and designs on the outside of the glass that do not pose difficult cleaning problems. High-end frosted glass decals and such are other options. Please contact us for further assistance.
If you are a building manager, please extinguish as many lights as possible at night during migration and encourage your tenants to do the same! This makes a huge difference in bird mortality. For 24/7 companies, please encourage the use of blinds at night- this will reduce the danger of strikes. Please consider removing dangerous internal lobby greenery or moving it well away from lobby windows. Contact us with questions or for assistance.
